This is another outstanding signed and dedicated 1938 dated SMS HESSEN pre-dreadnaught German battleship ship's captain photograph. This photo was part of the same estate another we have listed in a separate offering. The SMS HESSEN was a pre-WWI battleship that figured prominently in the Battle of Jutland in WWI. She was to be scrapped, then converted to a radio-control target ship, when WWII broke out. Instead, she was refitted with the same armament carried by current German warships and went back into war. This photo is dedicated to Commander Bauer and signed by the Squadron commander. The dedication refers to an action 5 June 1938. Included in this lot is the photo of the HESSEN on fire and German firefighters on deck dealing with the blaze. It measures 6-3/4 by 9 inches overall in the frame. The photo is 4-1/4 by 6-1/4 inches, the entire frame is 8-1/4 by 11 inches. It is in excellent condition, with some light foxing.
