Description
AWESOME BABY!!  A PTPer!! (PRIME TIME PLAYER)... From time to time, I have decided to remove a few selected rarities from my own personal collection to offer to other serious and astute collectors. Here is one such item I am offering...maybe a one-of-a-kind item from Alfred E. Smith, the Democratic nominee for President in 1928 against Herbert Hoover.  Obviously, with the youthful photo of Al, this is a pre-Presidential item, either from one of his campaigns for Governor of New York in 1918, 1920, 1922 or 1924, or even before that for Sheriff of New York County in 1915 or earlier as a member of the NY State Assembly.  I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER ONE OF THESE IN 28 YEARS OF COLLECTING LOCALS/COATTAILS/PRE-PRESIDENTIAL ITEMS.  TRULY A CENTERPIECE ITEM FROM ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT CANDIDATES AND AMERICAN PATRIOTS EVER! A little bio info: from the National Governor's Association website:  ALFRED EMANUEL SMITH, the forty-fifth and forty-seventh governor to serve New York, was born in New York City on December 30, 1873. His education was limited due to the death of his father. In an effort to help support his family, he went to work in a fish market at the age of fourteen. Smith first entered politics in 1903, serving as a member of the New York House of Representatives, a position he held twelve years. He also served as speaker of the house in 1913; was elected sheriff of New York County in 1915; and served as president of the New York board of alderman in 1917. Smith next secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor on November 5, 1918. He lost his 1920 reelection bid, but was successful in his 1922, 1924, and 1926 campaigns. During his tenure, women and children’s labor regulations were improved; the workmen’s compensation law was revised; a vehicular tunnel between New York and New Jersey was planned; and waterpower development was promoted. In 1928 Smith won the Democratic presidential nomination, but lost in the general election to Herbert Hoover. Smith, who was a rival of Franklin D. Roosevelt, became a leader of the American Liberty League in 1934, and openly denounced the liberal policies of Roosevelt. Smith eventually became involved in the planning of the Empire State Building, and was named as president of the Empire State, Inc, a corporation that ran the operations of the new building. Governor Alfred E. Smith passed away on October 4, 1944, and was buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Long Island City, New York.  And from the 'Political Graveyard' website:  Smith, Alfred Emanuel (1873-1944) — also known as Alfred E. Smith; Al Smith; "The Happy Warrior"; "The Brown Derby" — of Manhattan, New York County, N.Y. Born in New York, New York County, N.Y., December 30, 1873. Son of Alfred Emanuel Smith and Catherine (Mulvihill) Smith; married, May 6, 1900, to Catherine A. Dunn. Democrat. Real estate business; member of New York state assembly from New York County 2nd District, 1904-15; Speaker of the New York State Assembly, 1913; delegate to Democratic National Convention from New York, 1912 (alternate), 1916, 1920, 1932, 1936; delegate to New York state constitutional convention 11th District, 1915; Governor of New York, 1919-21, 1923-29; defeated, 1920; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1920, 1932; candidate for President of the United States, 1928; delegate to New York convention to ratify 21st amendment, 1933. Catholic. Irish, German, and Italian ancestry. Died October 4, 1944. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Long Island City, Queens, N.Y.; statue at Alfred E. Smith Park, Manhattan, N.Y.   Once the auction ends, how many years or decades are you willing to wait until you see another one for sale, if ever???  Here is your chance==RIGHT HERE==RIGHT NOW!! THANKS FOR LOOKING AND HAPPY BROWSING!!   An inspirational poem I thought you might enjoy---   He Leadeth Me   In pastures green? Not always; sometimes He who knoweth best, in kindness leadeth me In many ways where heavy shadows be. Out of the sunshine warm and soft and bright.. Out of the sunshine into the darkest night, I oft would faint with sorrow and affright, Only for this...I know He holds my hand; so whether in the green or desert land I trust although I may not understand.   And by still waters? No, not always so; Ofttimes the heavy tempests round me blow, And o'er my soul the waters and billows go. But when the storms beat loudest and I cry aloud for help, the Master standeth by And whispers to my soul, "Lo, it is I." Above the tempest wild I hear Him say, "Beyond this darkness lies a perfect day. In every path of thine I lead the way."   So whether on the hilltops high and fair I dwell, or in the sunless valleys where The shadows lie...what matters? He is there. So where He leads me, I can safely go, And in the blest hereafter I shall know Why in His wisdom, He hath led me so.   Rev. John Chaplain
